British Values
British Values at Hart Plain Junior School
Promoting British values
At Hart Plain Junior School we ensure that through our school vision, values, rules, curriculum and teaching we promote tolerance and respect for all cultures, faiths and lifestyles.
We have a duty to prepare our children for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe. We value the importance of the current Ofsted guidance:
should ensure that they and the school promote tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths (or those of no faith), cultures and lifestyles; and support and help, through their words, actions and influence within the school and more widely in the community, to prepare children and young people positively for life in modern Britain
At the School we value the diverse background of all our families and provide opportunities for pupils to explore their own culture and have a clear understanding and appreciation of a wide range of the cultural influences that have shaped modern Britain. Through the curriculum, we encourage all children to be tolerant and respectful to those of different faiths, beliefs and cultures in our local community and within Britain
Democracy
The principle of democracy is consistently being reinforced at Hart Plain Junior School, with democracy processes being used for important decisions within the school community, for instance, elections being held for School Council Members and House Captain Positions. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council, pupil questionnaires and pupil conferences. Our school behaviour policy involves rewards which the pupils have discussed. The principle of democracy is also explored in the History and Religious Studies curriculum as well as in form time and assemblies.
The rule of law
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at Hart Plain Junior School.
Pupils are taught the rules and expectations of the school which are exemplified by the school values. Through our citizenship curriculum, pupils are taught the value and the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. These messages are reinforced through the close links with our local Police Community Officers and involvement in the Junior PCSO, Junior Road safety and Hampshire Drink Driving Campaign initiatives.

Individual liberty
At Hart Plain Junior School, pupils are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at Hart Plain Junior School educates and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through e-safety, anti-bullying lessons and “Keep Safe” initiatives. Whether it is through choice of challenge, of how they record work, lunch options, participation in extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
Mutual Respect
Respect is a strong part of Hart Plain Junior School and is part of its core Values. Pupils learn that their behaviours has an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through the schools teaching and learning environments.
Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum by providing the opportunity for pupils to express their views in a safe environment. These ideas are reiterated through the school and classroom rules, as well as our behaviour policy. Additional pastoral support is given to individual children to help develop self – esteem and the concept of respect, e.g, Pride group, Parent and Child events and ELSA support.
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
This is achieved though equipping pupils with the ability to understand their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving the opportunities to experience such diversity within the school community. This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying are regularly held. We follow the Berkshire Agreed syllabus for RE and use the SEAL materials to enhance PSHE teaching.
Hart Plain Junior School strives endlessly to ensure that its pupils leave with the strongest foundation of values upon which to continue their education and build a successful life and a successful contribution to our Society.
We are very proud as a school as we feel our values are a true reflection of British Values.
